Disaster Management

Community-based disaster risk reduction and rehabilitation programmes are active in TSSS since post-tsunami era. Trivandrum Zone is prone to disaster, especially in connection with the sea: swell waves, sea erosion and cyclone. This department responded intensively during Ockhi cyclone, Kerala flood and the COVID-19. Presently TSSS in collaboration with Caritas India is actively involving in a Disaster Risk Reduction Programme. The end goal of any recovery programme should be to convert vulnerability into resilience through capacity building and disaster knowledge programmes so that the affected populations are ready to withstand/face/overcome another calamity. So Trivandrum Social Service Society, through the support from Caritas India went forward to work in 10 wards at Kalliyoor Panchayat in Trivandrum district.

Building a Resilient Community through Disaster Risk Reduction(DRR)

DRR is a capacity-building initiative in the flood and landslide affected regions, initiated after the Kerala flood of 2018. There was a rapid response from local communities, religious institutions, local administration, district and state administration and from the National Disaster Management Authority. All marched for massive rescue operations to evacuate people to safer places or relief camps. In this era of extreme climate change and erratic occurrences of untoward events, the project visualizes that the vulnerable communities should be prepared to face its aftermaths. Therefore, recovery should also aim to enrich, capacitate and build an army of resilient communities through a series of disaster preparedness meetings, trainings, and events.

Flood Relief Work

TSSS initiated flood relief works when Kerala was severely affected by flood in 2018 and 2019. TSSS took the initiative for collecting materials for the flood-affected families. Many good hearted people and youth volunteers joined hands with TSSS in relief activities to lighten the sufferings of the people and to find ways to rehabilitate them.
