Rehabilitation Programmes (Support for Physically and Mentally Challenged)
Awareness programmes and group discussions on environmental hygiene have been conducted in all the regions as it is a great concern of the organization. A day was set apart in these villages to eliminate mosquitoes with the help of Trivandrum Co-operation and respective Panchayats. Because of the awareness class and discussions, the surroundings of the common well, drainage etc were cleaned with the help of the people. Environment Day was observed by planting seedlings, creating awareness on global warming, controlling misuse of plastics etc. Cleaning programme are conducted in different places occasionally.
Waste Management Awareness Classes and Constructing Bio-gas Plants: Creating awareness regarding waste management also is a concern of the organization. Programmes are conducted in the unit and at centralized levels. People who are ignorant of the waste management methods become aware of different waste management methods and come forward willingly to construct Bio Gas plant, which is one of the waste management methods.
WATSAN (Water & Sanitation) Programme: As part of CBDP programme an initiative was taken to solve the acqute water and sanitation problems in the coastal areas of Trivandrum. The programme known as WATSAN had the following components.
- Construction of eco friendly two pit latrines
- Construction of wells fitted with hand pumps
- Well back washing
- Distribution of terracotta pots for vemi-compost
- Awareness classes on WATSAN
- Kitchen Garden
- Linkage with PRI for up- gradation of existing WATSAN models
Sanitation Programme: Lack of sanitary facilities is a major hazard of coastal belt. It is very acute in Trivandrum coast. Due to lack of awareness, high density of population, and geographical situation of water log conditions etc made the situation terrific. TSSS focuses not only to provide sanitary facilities but also trying to grow a culture of better usage of eco-system. Together with the assistance for the construction of toilets, awareness on the topic water and sanitation is given to the beneficiaries. Classes are focused on personal hygiene, need for improving health standard. This helps to sensitize the people on the importance of drinking good water and proper sanitation. IEC materials on this topic are distributed in villages with the collaboration of Government Health Department.
