Child Protection and Child Rights through Balavedies and Child Line

Balavedies: Balavedies association the children between 8-15 age group. Balavedies are active in 47 villages at the supervision of volunteers. They have been organized with the vision of a future youth, who are responsible, value oriented and socially committed. Some of the units gather every Sundays and some other once in two weeks and in few units once in a month. They have fixed plan to be implemented. Important days are observed in unit and regional levels. Childrens Parliaments are formed in nine areas. Trainings are conducted at the central level for the volunteers to equip them with new skills to guide the children. Timely unit visit of the coordinator of the programme, monthly reporting and evaluation at the regional level and bimonthly meetings at the central level help to monitor and evaluate the functioning of the units. Special camps for the children of the balavedies are conducted at the central level and regional camps conducted in all the eight regions inculcate values, develop leadership skills and social commitment.

Child line - 1098: CHILDLINE is a National, 24 hour, free emergency telephone helpline and outreach service for children n need of care and protection. Any child or any concerned person can dial the toll free number 1098 to access the service. CHILDLINE is a project of the Ministry of Women & Child Development, Government of India in partnership with State Governments, NGOs, the corporate Sector and concerned individuals. CHILDLINE provided emergency assistance to a child and subsequently based upon the childs need, the child is referred to an appropriate organization for long term follow up and care. The Government of India launched this service in 1998-1999.CHILDLINE is currently operational in 83 districts in India. In Kerala, CHILDLINE was first started in Thiruvananthapuram in the year 2000. Trivandrum Social Service Society (TSSS) functions as the Support Organization of CHILDLINE. We are responding calls for intervention, medical help, shelter, repatriation, rescue, sponsorship, assistance to missing children, emotional support and information. Awareness programmes are conducted on child rights and protection for children, parents, teachers and street children. Attending the meetings, campaigns, trainings, celebrations and workshops of the Nodal Agency and with other agency are also part of the programme.
